Malachy Tallack

Outriders

In the summer of 2017, I was one of five Scottish writers chosen by Edinburgh International Book Festival to undertake journeys across the Americas.
I travelled through the United States for three weeks, from north to south, beginning in North Dakota, through Appalachia, and ending in Louisiana. For much of this time I was accompanied by the novelist Jennifer Haigh. I wrote the diary posts below as we travelled.

Standing Rock, ND, to Eagle Butte, South Dakota.

Distance: 136 miles
Total: 706 miles

This morning we took some time to explore the site of the protest camp at Standing Rock, near Cannonball, North Dakota. The protesters have now all gone, though the arguments over the Dakota Access Pipeline are still ongoing.

From there we continued south, through Fort Yates and onward into south Dakota, stopping for the night in Eagle Butte, in the Cheyenne River Reservation.
